Analyze data and discover patterns through numbers

Introduction to Statistics

What is Statistics?

Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data. It helps us understand the world through numbers!

Key Concepts:

  • Data - Facts and figures we collect
  • Mean - The average of all numbers
  • Median - The middle number when ordered
  • Mode - The most frequently occurring number
  • Range - The difference between highest and lowest

Statistics in Real Life:

๐ŸŽฏ Sports: Player averages, team rankings, game statistics

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Weather: Average temperatures, rainfall measurements

๐Ÿซ School: Test scores, grade averages, attendance rates

๐Ÿ“ฑ Technology: App usage, website visitors, social media likes

๐Ÿฅ Health: Heart rate, height/weight measurements, medicine effectiveness

Collecting and Organizing Data

Before we can analyze data, we need to collect and organize it properly. Data can be numbers, categories, or measurements.

Example: Favorite Ice Cream Flavors

We surveyed 20 students about their favorite ice cream flavors:

Flavor Number of Students
Vanilla 8
Chocolate 6
Strawberry 4
Mint 2

Data Collection Practice

Count how many times each number appears in this dataset:

3, 7, 3, 8, 7, 3, 5, 7, 8, 3

How many times does the number 3 appear?

Mean and Median

Mean (Average): Add all numbers and divide by how many numbers there are

Median: The middle number when arranged in order

Example: Test Scores

Student scores: 75, 82, 88, 90, 95

Mean = (75 + 82 + 88 + 90 + 95) รท 5 = 430 รท 5 = 86

For median, the scores are already in order: 75, 82, 88, 90, 95

Median = 88 (middle number)

Calculate the Mean

12, 15, 18, 21, 24

What is the mean (average) of these numbers?

Mode and Range

Mode: The number that appears most frequently

Range: Highest number minus lowest number

Example: Daily Temperatures (ยฐF)

Weekly temperatures: 72, 75, 72, 68, 75, 72, 70

Finding Mode:

  • 72 appears 3 times
  • 75 appears 2 times
  • 68 and 70 appear 1 time each
Mode = 72 (most frequent)

Finding Range:

Range = 75 - 68 = 7

Find the Mode

4, 7, 4, 9, 7, 4, 6, 7, 4

What is the mode (most frequent number)?

Visualizing Data with Charts

Charts and graphs help us see patterns in data more easily. Different types of charts work better for different kinds of data.

Types of Charts:

  • Bar Chart: Good for comparing different categories
  • Line Graph: Shows how data changes over time
  • Pie Chart: Shows parts of a whole
  • Histogram: Shows frequency of data ranges

Pet Ownership Survey

Number of students who own each type of pet

Reading the Chart

Based on the bar chart above, how many students own cats?
